RB Sunrise Rotary Selects Abraxas Student of the Month

As part of its ongoing partnership with Abraxas High School, the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club announced their Student Of The Month award for January 2012 at this morning’s breakfast meeting.

The presentation to Derek Hudgins was made by teacher Bill Palmer and Rotarian Joseph Giamanco.

“Derek is a poster child for all the good things that come from an education at Abraxas High School,” explained Palmer to the room of 50+ professionals. “He’s been aggressively pursuing an education, understands how important it is to his future, and will actually be graduating three months ahead of the rest of his class.”

“Derek also plans to attend college, then go into the US Air Force,” his teacher proudly announced.

Said Mr. Hudgins; “Abraxas is an amazing school that lets students work at their own speed. I’m treated well there, and have really had a chance to improve my life.”

Joining in the conversation, Rotarian Joe Giamanco also noted how Abraxas has successfully cut dropout rates by fifty percent. “Obviously they’re doing something right over there.”

As a reward for his hard work, Derek received a gift certificate and an award in honor of his achievement from the RB Sunrise Rotary.

The RB Sunrise Rotary Club has announced the following lineup of for February, 2012. Their meetings are a MUST for anyone interested in camaraderie and community insight. The schedule includes:

February 7 Jonathan Smith MD, MBA – An Anesthesiologist for almost 40 years and an MBA, Dr. Smith combines insights into human behavior to provide solutions to many of today's personal and business issues. His topic: HEALTHIER is WEALTHIER.

February 14 Mel Robinson of US Identity Theft Solutions, LLC will discuss identity theft and how businesses can become compliant with the FACTA (Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act) Law.

February 21 Rotary District 5340’s Four-Way Speech Contest.

February 28 Gary Rossi will discuss strategic planning working with the Malcolm Baldridge school of Performance Excellence.

The meetings start promptly at 7:15 am at the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo, 12280 Greens East Road, San Diego, CA 92128. Speakers begin their presentations at 8:00 am. RB Sunrise Rotarians Teach Youth to LEAD

“Thank you, thank you, thank you Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club for giving me this priceless opportunity. Not only did I make friends and memories that will last me a lifetime, but I also got started on the path to making a difference in the world.”

These words poured from Samantha Lee at a recent breakfast meeting after her participation at Rotary’s LEAD Conference. LEAD stands for Leadership, Ethics And Determination.

This conference is a leadership and personal development program for 8th grade middle school students. Talented young people attend a two day camp developed, presented and paid for by the members of Rotary International District 5340 (San Diego and Imperial Counties).

Samantha was sponsored by the 50 professionals who make up the RB Sunrise Rotary Club.
LEAD encourages regional youth to examine ethical responsibility, improve leadership and communication skills, and develop a positive outlook on life. They do all this in an atmosphere that fosters fun and making new friends. Simultaneously, participating Rotarians have the opportunity to share their love of service, develop a new generation of leaders, provide valuable expertise, and bridge the gap between generations.

“There are only a few words to describe the experience” Samantha noted, mentioning “amazing” and “unforgettable” as those that are high on her list. She reports she returned from her weekend knowing she can make a difference in the world.

“LEAD tackles issues large and small,” observes club president Rick Coburn. “From long-range life planning to learning how to give firm handshakes, we’re providing these kids with the tools they need to build a better future for themselves and the world around them.”

“I learned a great many things,” Samantha says now. “I learned to stop putting myself down, to ignore my insecurities, and to work towards making a difference in the world. This experience changed my perspective on life.”

Visit of the Five Rotarians

This past Saturday five members of the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary began the year right for 78 orphans in Tijuana.

Coordinating with Club Rotario Milenio Minarete and Club Rotario Tijuana Oeste (both based in Tijuana), RB Sunrise arrived bright and early at Sonrisa de Angeles Orphanage.

Their primary goal was to participate in an annual religious celebration called the Visit of the Three Kings. Yet with the idea of service above self firmly in mind, the five San Diegans also brought with them sweatshirts and shoes as presents for each of the children.

“The facility is located in a remote location on the periphery of Tijuana, and houses 25 children on a full-time basis,” explained project coordinator Paul Gorman. He also noted an additional 24 young children are left there to allow their single mothers to work.
Wanting to maximize the opportunity, the three Rotary clubs also coordinated similar donations for the children of nearby Ciudad de los Niños orphanage.

A total of $1,600 was raised from contributions by generous San Diegans to purchase the sweatshirts and shoes for these 78 children in need. Said Gorman appreciatively; “We could never do this without the help of the larger community, and look forward to being able to help even more children in the future.”

RB Sunrise Rotary and Interact Start 2012 Right for 1,300 Needy Kids

With support from the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary, the Interact Club of Scripps Ranch High School helped 1,300 needy children start the new year off on a positive note.

By participating in the Annual Copley YMCA Holiday Party, Interactors helped deliver gifts for kids who needed them most. The day included raffling bicycles and other large gifts, playing games, applying temporary tattoos, snacks, a jumping machine, piñatas, and a photo booth.

Interact is Rotary International’s service club for students ages 12 to 18. Sponsored, supported and guided by individual Rotary clubs, it is the equivalent of a Rotary club at the high school level.

Interact clubs are expected to complete at least two community service projects, one of which furthers international understanding and goodwill. Through these efforts, Interactors develop a network of friendships with local and overseas clubs and learn the importance of leadership skills, personal integrity, helpfulness, respect for others, individual responsibility, hard work, international understanding and general goodwill.

There are over 10,700 Interact clubs with almost 200,000 young people in 109 countries and geographical areas around the world.

“We’re VERY proud of our Interactors” said program coordinator Joe Giamanco, who noted that 20 students represented the RB Sunrise Rotary at this year’s event. “These are the kinds of kids who demonstrate the quality of students working with Rotary International and their love for community service. They help provide a shining example for the rest of the community to follow.”

RB Sunrise Rotary Doesn’t Understand the word “NO”

Determined to continue improving lives at every age and income level throughout the community, 20 volunteers from the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club recently fanned out across area elementary schools to distribute free dictionaries to third graders.

“We organize this effort in cooperation with the SoCal Dictionary Project,” reports club president Rick Coburn. SoCal DP is dedicated to providing free English and Spanish/English bilingual dictionaries to all third grade students in the nation’s public schools. “We are very proud to have been involved in this excellent effort.” says Coburn, noting this is the ninth year the RB Sunrise Club has worked with area schools in this way.

Each year RB Sunrise Rotary distributes almost 1,350 dictionaries – one for every third grader at 11 San Diego-area elementary schools. The money used to sponsor this year’s program was raised during the club’s 2011 holiday campaign, an annual event that uses a full-page ad in area newspapers to thank the generosity of area individuals and businesses responsible for donating tens of thousands of dollars to help make North County a better place to live. RB Sunrise Rotary returns every dollar to the community through programs like the Dictionary Project.

Children at Dingeman, Ericson, Hage, Hickman, Jerabek, Mason, Midland, Painted Rock, Park Village, Valley, and Walker elementary schools benefited from the dictionary program. Coburn reports efforts are already underway to raise money for next year’s dictionary campaign.

Helping Provide A Facelift

Members and family of the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary (Karen Mortimer, Bill Mortimer, Rob Weinberg, Emily Weinberg, Randy Rose, Greg Stanton, Rex Teets) participated in the semi-annual FACELIFT project organized by Community HousingWorks. In the space of six hours, 750 volunteers helped clean up a tired neighborhood, painting fences, digging gardens, planting pavers, and hauling away (literally) tons of trash.

The Rotarians were so pleased with the results that the RB Sunrise Rotary club is planning to open this event to the entire membership and make it a regular community service project.

Joe Giamanco had a pleasant surprise at today's meeting as Carl Kruse announced Joe's being named as a Paul Harris award recipient. The Paul Harris award is given when $1,000 is contributed to the Rotary Foundation by a community leader or in their name. And though Joe hadn't yet earned enough points to qualify for the award on his own, his hard work in helping to improve the world around him apparently impressed others, who contributed points in his name.

“Here was a guy who had dropped out of school,” explained Leighton to the room of 50+ professionals. “Now he’s back into everything that school has to offer, is doing great things, and is earning credits right and left towards graduation.”

“Eric will be attending motorcycle maintenance school in Arizona upon graduation,” his teacher proudly announced.

Peter "I'm not a hobbit" Jackson was inducted this past week as the newest member of the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club.

Jackson joins longtime members Michael "I'm NOT the actor" Rennie and James "The other one" Stewart in the 50-member club.

"I've enjoyed community involvement in the past, which has mainly been by way of coaching youth sports" says the owner of Sign Distinction in Sabre Springs, "and as I go through the start-up phases of our new business i was searching for a way to continue that involvement on another level. I could think of no better way than by joining Rotary."

Interacters get scholarships

RYLA alumni Kate Anderson and Leanna Hansen joined us at breakfast this morning at the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo. Each received a $750 Interact scholarship.

This fall Leanna will be attending Montana State University as an enrollee in their honors college with a triple major in Neuroscience, Cell Biology and Community Health. She was the Interact Communications Officer for the past two years at Scripps Ranch HS, and also won the RB Sunrise Rotary 4-way test competition.

Kate is attending the University of Colorado (Boulder), where she will be majoring in Integrated Physiology, minoriing in Spanish, and expects to earn an Advanced Degree in Physical Therapy. During the last two years Kates served as Junior President and then President of the Scripps Ranch Interact Club. Over the past two summers she was also a Rotary Exchange student in both Germany and Italy.

Now Back From RYLA

So I spent the past weekend at RYLA - the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. Truly an educational experience on many levels as I spent 50 hours effectively tethered to nine high school juniors, none of whom knew me or each other prior to beginning the weekend. My group was made up of Alexis Jenkins, George Matta, Chalisa Sims, Reese Russell, Ali Cardenas, Emilie Myers, Maddie Wilson, Tanya Villalpando and Ben Esquivel.
We spent several in-depth hours talking about serious issues, had inspirational speakers like Garry Ridge (WD-40), above, and Jim Brogan, and got to know each other...and ourselves...a bit better.

All this at a campground in beautiful Idylwwild, CA. It was a stereotypical campground

where the food was just so-so, the accomodations drafty and uncomfortable, and the s'mores addictive. And while there were things I would have suggested be done differently, all in all I found the experience to rate 8 on a scale of 10.

If the kids got as much from it as I did, the experience will definitely serve them well.

And in case you're wondering, yes, I would do it again.

Said fellow Rotarian Craig Brown of Rancho Financial as he presented the pin, "Jim achieved his Paul Harris one-stone pin through the course of his normal giving to the Rotary Foundation. However, when the Foundation offered a recent promotion offering to match your contribution dollar for dollar, Jim jumped at the opportunity and donated $500. This morning, Jon Shea got the RB Sunrise Rotary monkey award for not monkeying around and taking charge as the liaison to the scouting community for the club.

RB Sunrise Rotary adds Three Paul Harris Fellows

The Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary club has added another three Paul Harris Fellows to its ranks, and they're doing it BIG!

The Paul Harris Fellowship Award is one of the highest honors Rotary can bestow upon an individual. Recipients are typically Rotarians, professionals and community leaders who are recognized for their outstanding contributions to those around them.

The honor and recognition accompanies a donation of $1,000 or more in the name of the recipient to Rotary International’s Paul Harris Fund in support of Rotary’s world-wide programs.

At this past Tuesday morning’s breakfast meeting, the club honored:

At the ceremony, past club president Carl Kruse observed, “Today’s event is particularly exciting. In addition to being the largest group to ever receive Paul Harris Fellowships at one time for our club, we’re also very pleased to honor Kendra's reaching the Double Fellowship level and Sue's achievement of the Triple Fellowship level.

Since its inception, the Paul Harris Foundation has been dedicated to doing good for those who may not be able to help themselves. The first grant in 1930 provided seed money for what became the Easter Seals Foundation.

“We can only hope our efforts here today also have that kind of positive result.” said Kruse.

The 65 business and community leaders in the RB Sunrise Rotary meet for breakfast every Tuesday at 7am at the RB Country Club on Greens East Road in RB. Professionals from throughout the region are invited to attend for some of the finest camaraderie to be found in north county, and prospective members are always welcome.

Here our Community Chair Rod Weiss makes a $1,000 contribution to the Ed Brown Center. And this was JUST after he'd given another $500 to the Jewish Family Services.Ya gotta love it!

Abraxas Student of the Month - February 2011

The Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary club welcomed their student and teacher of the month at breakfast today.

"Your donations are the lifeblood for students at Abraxas High School," said Teacher of the Month Jabette Caterina at this morning's meeting. She added "Your money is well invested, and we appreciate it more than you can ever know. You truly make a major change in their lives."

Said Student of the Month Linda Villanueva of her Abraxas experience and plans to become a Pediatric nurse, "Going to Abraxas has really helped me. I never had the kind of education and teachers as I have had here. Thank you for making a difference."

Helping Mary's House

Open since summer 2003 and located in rural Escondido, Mary’s House is the first North County program that provides transitional housing for young women who have outgrown the county’s foster-care facilities. Mary’s House helps these women, ages 18-24, with their ongoing educational needs, job placement and life skills - from chores to household budgeting. The facility has room for six women, each of whom can stay up to 18 months as they shift to independent, self-sufficient lives.

Here we have Krista Creighton picking up a check for $2,500 from Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Community Chair Rod Weiss. Just another way our club does the right thing for those most in need.

Military Outreach Ministry

Matt Guillory - President at Mission Valley Sunset Rotary Club and Vice President at Comerica Bank - came in to yesterday's meeting and taught us more than we ever realized we wanted to know about using Facebook to grow our club, our businesses, and our personal lives.
Not surprisingly, a full third of the club doesn't use Facebook due to privacy concerns, lack of time, lack of interest, or fear that it'll become a huge time sucker (okay - that lasts about two weeks until the novelty wears off. Then it becomes a useful tool, right?)

The facts and figures this guy came in with were truly astounding. And though there was a small technical glitch (which nobody noticed, because they were all on their blackberries playing Farmville), he carried everything off with aplomb!

Thanks, Matt, for broadening our worlds. We appreciated your taking the time to join us and to keep it all very interesting. Maybe one of us can return the favor sometime.

Steve Redd Does Good...Again!

Congratulations to Steve Redd for getting his second Paul Harris award. The Paul Harris award is given when $1,000 is contributed to the Rotary Foundation, either by the individual being honored or in their name. The money is used for helping to defeat polio, develop clean water projects, electrifying Africa, helping those who have never walked to acquire wheelchairs, and a host of other worthwhile programs for which Rotary International is known.

Abraxas Student of the Month - December 2010

As part of its ongoing partnership with Abraxas High School, the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club announced their Student Of The Month award for December 2010.

The presentation to Lorraine Liwanag was made by teacher Bob Lutticken and Rotarian Joseph Giamanco.

“Loraine hasn’t missed a day of school in a year and a half,” reported Mr. Lutticken, while also noting “she helps everybody and anybody both on and off the field.” Thanking the RB Sunrise Rotary for their ongoing support, he stated, “We have so many people in college because of you.”

Given the expanding programs at Abraxas and their success at cutting their dropout rate by fifty percent, it’s quite apparent they’re doing something right over there.

Loraine was treated as a VIP by the 65 professional members of the RB Sunrise Rotary Club. She was given a gift certificate and an award in honor of her achievement.

Meet George Brown - CEO of the Armed Services YMCA of Camp Pendleton, CA.
George visited our club yesterday morning to tell us about Project Liberty Call, Concrete Beach, Operation Hero and the ASYMCA Preschool Programs. "The Armed Services YMCA's sol mission is to serve Camp Pendleton's active duty and their family members." he said, adding "There are many programs and services in place to achieve this goal, and witht he ever-changing needs of this region's service members, the ASYMCA must stand ready to respond to those needs as well."

George then talked about the Ball Gown giveaway and the annual Mud Run, and I couldn't help but wonder if they are both held on the same day...

Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary is a club I'm proud to call mine. Today we learned that our own Carl Kruse - former club president, Poway city council member, former Poway mayor, retired banker, and all around good guy (his license plate says SERVIZ - kind of says it all) - has secured his place in line to be Governor of Rotary District 5340 in 2013-2014. However, since Rotary has a trial period (during which he'll have training wheels on his shoes), it is (for the moment) a provisional appointment. This means Carl is now officially (get this) the District Governor Elect Designate Nominee, Provisional.

I want to know how he's going to fit all that onto his business card.

In addition to a standing ovation from the club he calls home, all the stars came out for Carl as District Governor Dave Breeding was joined by a host of other celebrities to honor the next guy to wear the maroon sports coat.

Well done, Carl. We all kid you about ... well, just about everything, actually. But we're VERY proud of you. Ya done good!

RB Sunrise Rotary Distributes Six Interact Scholarships

At this past week’s breakfast meeting, RB Sunrise Rotary awarded its first scholarships to departing members of the Scripps Ranch Interact club. Six scholarships of $500 each were distributed.

Interact is Rotary International’s service club for students ages 12 to 18. Sponsored, supported and guided by individual Rotary clubs, it is the equivalent of a Rotary club at the high school level.

Interact clubs are expected to complete at least two community service projects, one of which furthers international understanding and goodwill. Through these efforts, Interactors develop a network of friendships with local and overseas clubs and learn the importance of leadership skills, personal integrity, helpfulness, respect for others, individual responsibility, hard work, international understanding and general goodwill.

There are over 10,700 Interact clubs with almost 200,000 young people in 109 countries and geographical areas around the world.

“We’re VERY proud of our Interactors” said program coordinator Phil Schneider upon announcing the scholarships. “While all our students are very active with the programs we’ve established for them, these six in particular stood out and deserved to be recognized. They demonstrate the quality of students working with Rotary International and their love for community service, and help provide a shining example for the rest of the community to follow.”

The students receiving the scholarships (and the schools they’ll be attending this fall) are:

“We see this as a way to help instill positive values that will guide young peoples’ choices throughout their lives, simultaneously strengthening their academic and social skills.” Dr. Jeffcoat continues, adding “In reinforces Rotary’s 4-Way Test, which asks of everything a person thinks, says and does, the following:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all Concerned?

“We’re delighted to be in a position to help the youth now leaving Scripps Ranch High School to start the next chapter of their lives with some tangible support.”

Mr. Shaw spent 33 years at the Daily Transcript, U-T and San Diego Metropolitan writing more about Downtown San Diego redevelopment and local banking and finance than just about anyone else. The Convention Center generates $1.3 billion a year in economic impact and supports 12,000 fulltime jobs throughout the county.

RB Sunrise Rotary Donates $1,000 to Ed Brown Senior Center

Ever eager to help those most in need within the community, the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary has contributed $1,000 to the Ed Brown Senior Center.

The Ed Brown Senior Center sponsors everything older residents could possibly want in a community center. Writing seminars, games, socials, virtual driving lessons, health screenings and a wide range of classes and entertainment are all available free to members paying a small annual fee.

Operating entirely without tax support for operating expenses, the Ed Brown Senior Center sometimes finds it a challenge to meet their budgetary needs. “We usually don’t have any extra dollars for upgrading old equipment or buying new.” said Program Director Kathy Weyer. She added “We are planning on using this $1,000 donation both to improve our efficiency and provide additional services for our membership.”

“We’re delighted to be able to help the Ed Brown Center meet such a critical need” said the club’s past-president Nasrin Barbee upon presenting the donation. She noted “Rotary International always tries to be present when there’s a significant need anywhere in the world.”

At the ceremony, past club president Carl Kruse observed, “Today’s event is particularly exciting. In addition to being the largest group to ever receive Paul Harris Fellowships at one time for our club, we’re also helping the Barbee family to have a full set of Paul Harris Fellowships.” Ms. Barbee’s sister Cindy, father Ralph, and mother Nasrin all previously received the same award.

Since its inception, the Paul Harris Foundation has been dedicated to doing good for those who may not be able to help themselves. The first grant in 1930 provided seed money for what became the Easter Seals Foundation. “We can only hope our efforts here today also have that kind of positive result.” said Kruse.

The 65 business and community leaders in the RB Sunrise Rotary meet for breakfast every Tuesday at 7am at the RB Country Club on Greens East Road in RB. Professionals from throughout the region are invited to attend for some of the finest camaraderie to be found in north county, and prospective members are always welcome.

The Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary has welcomed Laura Gillig and Jacques Lord as new members:

Ms. Gillig – a Priority Banking Officer for Union Bank – is also the head of US operations for Oasis Haven, a South African non-profit organization that seeks to place and care for abandoned and HIV positive children. Mr. Lord is an environmental consultant, geologist, and professional magician.

Both are joining Rotary with just one idea in mind – to help those around them. “I seek to make a difference in our community” says Gillig, who recently moved to North County and expects this to be the last place she ever lives.

For Lord the move into Rotary is a little more personal. “I want an opportunity to serve my community” he notes, but more importantly “I need to pay back for the services that were rendered to me and my family during the aftermath of the 2007 fires.”

The Lords are almost finished unpacking after moving into their recently completed home. It is considered by building experts to be perhaps the “greenest” house in San Diego, in large part thanks to Mr. Lord’s expertise.

Now in its 105th year, Rotary has grown steadily over the years and currently has well over 1.2 million members in almost 34,000 clubs worldwide.

“These are precisely the kinds of people we want to have in Rotary” observed Nasrin Barbee as she introduced the new members and presided over her last meeting as club president.

RB Sunrise Rotarians learn wheelchair dancing

The RB Sunrise Rotary Club recently played host to a team of wheelchair dancers.

“We match able-bodied partners with wheelchair users, teaching them both to cha-cha, rumba and waltz,” explained club co-founder Beverly Weurding, adding “We’re big on ballroom and Latin dancing too. Because learning to dance alongside an able-body partner gives wheelchair users a sense of confidence and equality that is sometimes missing in their lives.”

“Wheelchair dancing increases muscle strength and helps those who are physically challenged to make friends and be socially active” observed club president Nasrin Barbee. By the end of the meeting, many of the morning Rotarians – ranging in age from quite youthful to advanced years – had participated in this unique springtime social.

“We’re now matching able-bodied volunteers up for our next round of classes” Weurding noted with a smile. “You should all join us in La Mesa, where all our classes are free.”

The 65 members of the RB Sunrise Rotary can be found sharing a sense of conviviality every Tuesday morning at 7 am at the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo, 12280 Greens East Road, San Diego, CA 92128. RB Sunrise Rotarian Plays for Chelsea’s Light

RB Sunrise Rotarians live their lives to do right by others. So it was no surprise when longtime member Michael Moon announced he’s taking time away from his financial planning business to help raise money for the Chelsea’s Light Foundation (chelseaslight.org) with his rock and roll band.

Called “The Grateful Dads”, Moon’s group started as a lark in 2002 and quickly developed a loyal following. “We’re now in our third chapter” Moon explains “and we play fun, danceable, rock and roll.”

“But this is bigger than making music. There isn’t a family in RB or Poway that hasn’t been heavily impacted by the recent tragedy that befell Chelsea King” says Moon. “Whether or not you have children in the schools, it’s easy to appreciate the pain her family continues to feel.”

“We all want to reach out to help the Kings” Mr. Moon explains “and those of us in the band wanted to do our part.” For the Grateful Dads, doing their parts consists of providing a fun community event and raising some money for a worthy cause - all at the same time.”

The Foundation is dedicated to helping eliminate harm to children by sexual predators through community activism, legislative reform, and education. Its efforts are tied to Chelsea’s Law, a piece of legislation sponsored by Nathan Fletcher and currently working its way through the state legislature and seen as a model for other states to follow. Chelsea’s Law (“The Chelsea King Child Predator Prevention Act of 2010”) significantly increases sentences for sexual offenses against minors -doubling current penalties, creates life-without-possibility-of-parole sentences, and requires lifetime parole for most of these offenses.

The event which Mr. Moon’s group will be headlining is scheduled for 8 pm on Saturday, June 5th at Kaminski’s BBQ & Sports Lounge (12735 Poway Road, Poway). 10% of the evening’s proceeds (and 10% of all Kaminski’s sales for the entire June 4-6 weekend) will go directly to the Foundation.

A live auction with items such as a flat screen television and season tickets at the Poway Center for Performing Arts professional season is also planned. There will be a small cover charge for the concert, and attendees will also be encouraged to make direct donations to the Chelsea’s Light Foundation that evening and afterwards.

“100% of the money paid to the Grateful Dads, and a big chunk of money raised that weekend, will go directly to benefiting this very worthwhile organization.” says Moon, adding, “As for us, we’re just there to have a good time and help out. We aim to make this an exciting and fun way to enjoy a pleasant June evening while doing the right thing for our community.”

FX5, which will be playing at Kaminski’s that Friday night, has announced that they will also be donating a portion of their performance fees to the Chelsea’s Light Foundation. Speaking on behalf of the Foundation, Susan Wintersteen says she’s anticipating a great show. “I’ve seen these guys perform, and you can’t help but enjoy yourself. Do yourself a favor and come both nights - you don’t want to miss this weekend!”

There will also be an exciting raffle drawing on Sunday night, with tickets being sold all weekend. Mr. Moon reminds buyers they won’t need to be present to win.

“Come for the dancing. Come for the laughs. Come for the live auction. Or come to help carry forward the vision of a world without sexual predators having free reign to harm our children.” says Moon “Come for whatever reason you want, but for heaven’s sake, DON’T MISS THIS EVENING!”

Mr. Moon also warns; “We’re expecting a big crowd that night, so plan to get there early.”

RB Sunrise Rotary Names Carl Kruse “Hats Off Volunteer”

At this past weekend’s “Hats off to Volunteers” event in Webb Park, Poway Councilman Carl Kruse was feted by members of the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary for his community-minded spirit and willingness to volunteer. And volunteer. And volunteer.

“Carl is one of those people who seems to be all places at the same time,” observed club president Nasrin Barbee. “In addition to being past president of the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary club, he’s been on every committee imaginable in our organization, coaching and guiding both new members and veterans alike. He also did a stint Assistant Governor for Rotary International District 5340, which covers San Diego County and parts of Imperial County.”

Kruse is currently the District Governor's Chief of Staff and the District Membership Chair. In addition to having been Assistant Governor, he also helped Rotary International in the recent past as the Club Foundation Chair; was named Rotarian of the Year in 2009; and earned the prestigious Rotary Presidential Citation in 2007. He’s been a Facilitator for the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA); helped a team of the region’s top teenagers to fulfill their leadership potential at the Leadership, Ethics and Determination conference (LEAD); and volunteered to travel to India at great personal expense to aid in that country’s Polio Immunization efforts.

“I’m tired just thinking about it!” Barbee laughed.

With 1.3 million members in over 33,000 clubs worldwide, Rotary International requires a considerable regional administration to support individual club communications, membership development, successful community and international service projects, support of the The Rotary Foundation, and the development of leaders beyond the club level. International headquarters in Evanston, IL, relies on people like Carl Kruse to make things happen successfully.

“Carl has played a significant role within the District 5340 administration during his 14 years in Rotary.” said president-elect Al Watson. “Here is a man who truly lives his life according to Rotary’s Four Avenues of Service-Club, Vocational, Community, and International. He’s an inspiration to us all.”

Carl, whose vehicle license reads SERVIZ, in keeping with Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self”, adheres daily to the motto “Rotary is a Journey, Not a Destination”.

As columnist Eileen Haag observed:

Kendra Jeffcoat has just completed her term as president of the RB Sunrise Rotary and her successor is Nasrin Barbee. The president-elect of the RB Noon Rotary is Barbara Baldwin.

Methinks that the men who didn’t want to admit women in the first place may have been right in saying that to let them in would be to let them take over — and it seems that now everyone agrees that’s a good thing!

It was a teary time this morning as Kendra thanked everyone who helped make her year a success. As part of this, Kendra instituted a new tradition - the passing of the scarf (and good wishes) from old presidents to new. I found it vaguely reminiscent of the SUNY Binghamton tradition of Stepping on the Coat, done each spring.

Now Kendra will, no doubt, take a well-deserved break to catch her breath, then find her own niche within the club. It should be interesting to see where in the heirarchy she ends up after all is said and done.

Maybe I do write well after all...

Continuing its ongoing philosophy of “Service Above Self”, as well as working to forward the interests of every corner of the community, the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club honored five Scripps Ranch High School juniors - Lauren Trott, Emily Berg, Shivangi Maniar, Vanessa Arredondo and Claire Tran - at this week’s breakfast meeting.

Recently returned from the annual Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA), the five students were provided an opportunity to emphasize leadership, citizenship, and personal growth skills during an intensive weekend at Idyllwild Pines Camp in Idyllwild, California. They were joined by hundreds of other similarly-minded youths from San Diego and Imperial Counties for the exercise, whose theme was “Knowledge is Power”.

“RYLA is a training program established by Rotary International for young community activists. It emphasizes leadership, citizenship, and personal growth” explained program coordinator Lloyd Trilling as he introduced the students sponsored by RB Sunrise Rotary. In addition, RYLA gives participants an opportunity to:

Share motivating experiences with influential members of regional business and community groups

Be mentored to further develop their talents and abilities

Accomplish personal goals through teamwork

“This weekend inspired us all that we can make a difference in the world” recalled Shivangi Maniar. It’s a difference they’ll continue to reflect upon at the anniversary of their RYLA participation. This is when each participant will receive a letter she wrote to herself about how she envisions her future.

It's Noon and I'm still in my pajamas

Well, last night was the demolition party for club president Kendra Jeffcoat, and what a night it was. Starting with the cocktail hour at the Radisson Suite Hotel in Rancho Bernardo, the RB Sunrise Rotary Club showed they're always up for a grand old time. And though it got a bit cozy in the room, the 60-some members, spouses and guests all had a great time. Kendra even brought her dog Trevor for the occasion.

Past President Carl Kruse acted as Master of Ceremonies, and there was much of the usual fun and frivolity from one of these events. Past president Steve Sayler said a few words - I wonder what they were. Then President-elect designate nominee in waiting Mike Miller said a few words, and he's wondering what they were.

From there we went into a skit poking fun at Jay Jeffcoat, Kendra's husband and resident member of Kiwanis, starring Jim Roth and Carly Bohnsack. President elect Nasrin Barbee carried on in a blonde wig about what a selfless person Kendra is.

Then we were on to a video showing Kendra's entire life (though given that almost everything the woman owned was lost in the Witch Creek Fires 18 months ago, most of what was in the video had to be fabricated. I'm still not sure if she was really a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model or if, maybe, they were making that part up!)

Turning to a serious portion of the proceeds, Carl Kruse brought on councilmember Carl DeMaio to officially declare yesterday "Kendra Jeffcoat Day" within the city of San Diego. Of course, it was after 7pm by the time we heard about this, so it probably should have been called "Kendra Jeffcoat's 15 minutes of fame", but there it is. Why don't they tell you it's your day at 6am so you can make the most of it?

Carl (Kruse) was also busy getting swag from Senator Dianne Feinstein, the Rainbow Girls (who helped set Kendra on her path 40 years ago) and a ton of other people. All this was witnessed, by the way, by our district governor, governor elect, governor designate, governor designate elect, and the pool boy working next door who just happened to wander in to see what all the hollering was all about. Nice job, Carl!

As the party-goers munched on steak and salmon, salad and dessert (and drank a LOT of wine, which is probably why they didn't notice the pool boy!), new officers were installed for 2009-10. The outgoing officers were thanked (with more wine!) and Kendra was showered with gifts, including at least two books of jokes. Given her track record in the humor department, I frankly found it surprising that only two of us gave her joke books.

Lots and laughing, joking and good-natured ribbing were trumped, though, by the evening's last three events:

1) Jay Jeffcoat was made a Paul Harris Fellow, which makes him a Rotarian in spirit, even if he insists on calling himself a Kiwanian.

2) Kendra made one of the nicest speeches I've heard in a very long time - one that obviously came from the heart about how much working with this club had meant to her and how the past year has changed and improved her life.

3) Carl read a poem. Unlike the past when he would write a poem of his own, though, Carl read the following:

“Heavenly Father, up above
Help me live the words I love,
Help my Rainbow Dreams come true
In everything I say and do,
Bless those who have faith in me
That the girl they want, is the girl I’ll be.
And when the sunset ends the day
Our living Rainbow will guide the way.”
Amen

This is a poem that Kendra wrote when she was involved with Rainbox many years ago. To this day, "All of our girls still say it at every meeting". reports Sara Lee Martin of Rainbox.

When Carl was done there wasn't a dry eye in the house. It's no wonder I love this club so much!

The latest issue of the RB Sun Signature hit the streets last night and there was a dandy article there about our club (Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary) going to Tijuana to build a house in a day. Of course, we did the event in October and the story appeared in June, but hey - that's the nice thing about publicity: It's the gift that keeps on giving.

We're slowing inching towards our new presidency on July 1 (my 5th anniversary with the club!), and the demotion party is scheduled for this coming Friday. I must get out the announcement that Nasrin will be taking over.

As I approach my fifth anniversary with Rotary, I find myself marveling at the energy and commitment of club presidents and their spouses (or significant others). In addition to having a job or business to manager, these dedicated officers invariably have families, friends, social lives, and the like.

Yet here they are, willing to set it all aside for two years of training and a year at the helm, all in the name of doing good things for the community around them. They attend endless meetings, setting a structure in place to keep their club members involved and entertained, raising money, raising awareness, and raising connections.

I know I would never have the patience, commitment, and tenacity to do what they do. I am truly in awe of such people, and appreciate having them available to do what I cannot.

Getting back into the swing of things

Okay, it's been a while since I've done a post. Sorry 'bout that. Like everyone, I've been focusing on business and trying to keep the boat from capsizing. Things are still hairy out there, but it's time for me to start reporting again.

This morning we had Jim Ponder of Turnkey Strategic Relations (Escondido, CA) come speak to our club. Good stuff. He's a wise man who has been on the entrepreneurial side of things and now coaches business owners in how to make the most of their opportunities. He brought his delightful daughter Kelli with him, who works side-by-side with her dad and is learning the industry from the inside-out. I applaud them both.

Kendra Jeffcoat's year is quickly winding down and Nasrin Barbee is gearing up to take over. Don't look now, but I think they're planning something to celebrate the transition. Meanwhile, we've got the demotion party (or Demolition party, as past president (and potential city council member) Carl Kruse likes to call it) on June 12.

Our little club continues to grow, and a public thank you was provided this morning both to Jim Dunny (webmaster/club secretary) and to Jana Markley (membership chair) for all their hard work and success in growing our club. Add to this a story that appeared in the Pomerado Newspapers about our guest Cindy Barbee (okay, I had something to do with that - I admit it) and it was a busy day.

Rotary International Convention sets Guinness record for world’s largest book drive

How many donated books does it take to set a world’s record? Rotary club members from around the world found out during the Rotary International convention at the L.A. Convention Center that ran from June 15-18.

At the invitation of the Southern California and Southern Nevada Rotary clubs hosting the convention, many of the nearly 20,000 registrants from more than 140 countries brought children’s books representing their home cultures and languages for the Wide World of Books project. This international book drive, co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Times’ Reading by 9 program, aims to gather 250,000 books to be donated to public school students in grades K-3 throughout the region, where studies show too many children read below grade level.

The Rancho Bernardo Rotary Club and RB Sunrise Rotary Club were both active participants, and donated well over 1,100 books from just their two clubs. Other area Rotary clubs were equally energetic in their participation. Members of the public were also encouraged to drop off books at the Convention Centers during the convention itself.

While final confirmation is still pending, organizers of the event are confident that the quarter of a million books gathered in the week’s time will qualify for a Guinness World Record. An adjudicator from Guinness was on hand to certify the results. Rotary members unable to make the trip to Los Angeles have also been invited to contribute through a “virtual book drive”.

During the convention, a symbolic “mountain of books” welcomed convention registrants and members of the public in the atrium of the Los Angeles Convention Center, where Rotary members were available to read to local schoolchildren.

“It is symbolic that the mountain of books was built atop the world map in the atrium’s floor design,” says local Rotary leader Ingo Werk, who chaired the project. He noted that nearly 100 languages are spoken throughout the diverse Los Angeles Unified School District.

The book drive is just one example of the hundreds of literacy-related projects supported by Rotary clubs worldwide. “Literacy is crucial in determining a person’s overall academic, professional, and personal success,” says Werk.

The annual Rotary convention is the humanitarian service organization’s most important meeting of the year, giving members from around the world an opportunity to plan service projects, share success stories and renew acquaintances. It is often described as a “mini-United Nations” due to its international and cultural diversity.
